As a renter, you've created a cozy home filled with your belongings. But what happens if your cherished possessions are damaged or stolen? That's where tenant insurance comes in. Whether you're renting an apartment, condo, or house, tenant insurance protects the contents of your rented property and provides you with peace of mind.
Tenant insurance ⎯ also known as renters insurance, condo tenant insurance, or content insurance ⎯ is essential for anyone who rents their living space. Unlike landlord's insurance, which covers the building itself, tenant insurance covers your personal property, liability, and additional living expenses if you're forced to temporarily relocate due to a covered event.
As a tenant, you have unique insurance requirements that are different from the needs of homeowners. That's why we've tailored our Tenant Insurance coverage for renters like yourself - and you can customize it even more to suit your individual needs. This policy covers three crucial areas: Contents, Additional Living Expenses, and Personal Liability.
Simply put, Contents Insurance covers your personal belongings - the contents of your home. This helps pay for any loss or damage to your personal property, including if anything is stolen or damaged.
Have you ever wondered what you would do if you couldn't live in your apartment due to an emergency? This coverage can help you pay for hotels and food if you are forced out of your home after a covered event.
Accidents happen. And they can be costly. Personal Liability coverage protects you if you are held responsible for property damage or personal injury to others, at home or anywhere else.

Does Tenant Insurance Cover Water Damage?
Coverage for a water damage claim depends on the perils listed in your policy. Find out examples where water damage is covered by reading our article Does Renter’s Insurance Cover Water Damage?
Does Tenant Insurance Cover Fire?
Yes, renter’s insurance covers fire. This is the case regardless of how the blaze was started, unless the fire was intentionally set by you.

What is Tenant Insurance and why is it important?
Most people are familiar with home insurance. Less familiar is Tenant Insurance (also known as renters insurance), which protects you if you're renting a residence. Renters Insurance is a requirement for many landlord-tenant lease agreements, but even if it's not, it's a good idea to have. It can end up saving you from covering the cost of replacing your valuable items in the event of a fire, theft, or flood.
Tenant Insurance can also help pay for the extra costs of having to live somewhere else if your residence becomes uninhabitable due to an insured loss. This can include the cost of lodging, such as temporary rent at a separate location, hotels, or Airbnbs, and can also help with other costs like restaurant meals and storage fees.
Although landlords likely have insurance of their own, your landlord's insurance typically only covers the building. This leaves your contents of your unit unprotected. Further, if you were found liable for damages to the building, your landlord's insurance company may come after you for the costs. Renters Insurance can aid you in both of these situations. Further, it can cover certain expenses that arise from an emergency. Read more about the benefits of Renters Insurance here.
Is tenant insurance mandatory?
While there’s no legal requirement that says all renters need to have a tenant insurance policy, many landlords will require proof of a policy before handing over the keys. It’s also important to note that landlords often require the policy to be continuous as a condition of the lease, so you’ll need a valid insurance policy throughout your tenancy. You don’t want to get caught out in the cold because you canceled your tenant insurance policy early.
Besides all that, there are other great reasons to have tenant insurance:
Tenant insurance protects you and your loved ones from having to pay out of pocket in the event of unforeseen events such as fire or theft.
Staying covered also helps you build up an insurance history so you won’t have any difficulty getting a homeowner’s policy for if you decide to buy a house.
If someone gets hurt on your property, they can sue you for damages. We know Fido means well, but the mailman may not. Tenant insurance can cover any legal fees and damages you may have to pay.

How much coverage do I need?
When thinking about how much coverage you need, consider everything in your home that you would need to replace should a fire burn your unit down. It can be a good idea to periodically audit your home and tally up what everything's worth. Then, check your insurance to make sure you have enough to cover the cost of replacing it all.
If you live near a body of water such as a lake, river, or creek, you may be more susceptible to risks such as flooding and sewer back-up. If so, we encourage you to select our Enhanced Coverage: Water Damage extension. This additional coverage will keep you covered for these possible worst case scenarios, providing you with priceless peace of mind.

How early do I need to get tenant insurance?
It's always a good idea to set up your tenant insurance policy as soon as you've signed your lease, to ensure that there are no complications. This way, you don't have to worry about not having coverage or paying for coverage before you need it.

Accidents that occur on your property, such as the mail carrier slipping and falling in your driveway
Bodily injury to an individual due to negligence, such as your dog biting a visitor in your home
Property damage caused by negligence, such as flooding due to not properly maintaining your washing machine
However, there are some limitations to this coverage, including:
Liability resulting from an automobile accident (typically covered by auto insurance)
Intentional bodily injury or property damage caused by you or a family member in your home may not be covered
Injuries or damages sustained by you or family members in your home may not be covered

Your tenant insurance policy covers your personal belongings in the event of covered losses such as theft, fire, and water damage etc. However, there may be special limits that apply to certain contents (e.g. jewelry) and the deductible that need to be paid. Are there any additional coverages under this tenant policy that I may not be aware of?
We offer a range of optional coverages that you can add to your policy to tailor your coverage to your specific need. Here are some examples of the additional coverages that you can add to your tenant insurance policy:
Enhanced water damage coverage: This coverage can protect you against losses caused by water damage that's not typically covered by standard policies, such as damage caused by flooding or sewer backup.
Increased contents insurance: If you have valuable possessions that are worth more than the standard contents coverage limit, you can opt to increase your coverage to ensure that you have adequate protection in case of loss or damage.
Additional living expenses: If you're unable to live in your rented space due to a covered loss, this coverage can help pay for the additional expenses you incur while temporarily living elsewhere, such as hotel bills or increased transportation costs.
Personal liability coverage: This coverage can protect you if you're held responsible for damage to someone else's property or if someone is injured while on your rented property. For example, if a guest slips and falls in your rented space and sues you for medical expenses, personal liability coverage can help cover the costs of the lawsuit.

If I suffer an insured loss and make a claim on my tenant insurance policy, will I be required to pay a deductible?
If you experience a covered loss and need to make a claim on your tenant insurance policy, you may be required to pay a deductible. The amount of the deductible will be shown on the Declaration page of your policy and will typically be subtracted from the total amount of your covered loss. This means that we will only pay the portion of the covered loss that exceeds the deductible.
However, it's worth noting that some special coverages under the Tenant's package may not require a deductible. For example, certain coverages such as lock replacement, freezer food spoilage, and fire department charges may be exempt from the deductible requirement.
To ensure that you have a clear understanding of your policy's deductible requirements and any applicable exemptions, we recommend reviewing your policy documentation.

It's important to note that there may be certain limitations and exclusions on this coverage, which are outlined in your policy wording.

At what point will I be charged for my tenant insurance policy?
The timing of your charges for your tenant insurance policy depends on the payment frequency you select.
If you choose an annual payment plan, you will be charged for the full policy amount upfront when you purchase the policy.
On the other hand, if you select a monthly payment plan, you will be charged for the first month right away and subsequently charged each month afterwards. By default, the monthly charges will occur on the same date as your first payment, but you can choose to change this at the checkout page.
So, whether you prefer to pay upfront or spread your payments out over time, you have the flexibility to choose the payment frequency that works best for you.

Can I add a roommate to my policy?
Each roommate has to purchase a policy in their own name to ensure they receive the appropriate coverage so that they can find a personalized solution that works for them. For example, you may have a roommate that will require higher limits to insure an expensive e-bike.
Similar to getting your own credit card to build a credit history, you'll also want to consider the importance of building up your own insurance history. This can help you get discounts on future insurance purchases, such as when you move to a new apartment, or insure a new condo.
With regards to your family, the tenant policy will cover common-law partners, spouses, and family members automatically under your policy, provided they live in the insured residence.

Similar to getting your own credit card to build a credit history, you'll also want to consider the importance of building up your own insurance history. This can help you get discounts on future insurance purchases, such as when you move to a new apartment or insure a new condo.
It is also worth noting that claims handling experience can be much more difficult and complicated by the inclusion of roommates on a single policy with questions about ownership of specific items and who should receive payment. While our competitors may allow roommates, our top priority at APOLLO is to provide you with the best experience as a customer.

What is Additional Living Expense Coverage?
Additional Living Expense Coverage can help pay for the extra costs of having to live somewhere else if your residence becomes uninhabitable due to an insured loss. What is Personal Liability Coverage?
Liability insurance protects you if you're held responsible for property damage or bodily injuries at home. This includes major property loss events such as accidentally causing water damage by leaving the tub faucet on or starting a fire with a misplaced or forgotten candle. Not commonly known, it can also give you peace of mind while travelling worldwide in many situations.
Example #1: Say you've finally arrived at a beautiful beachside resort and you've rented out a private area where you can watch the sunset. As you're walking along the beach, the wind gets unruly and causes your torches to light the area on fire. The resort could hold you personally responsible for the damages to the hotel and the lost income from other potential guests while they rebuild. Having the correct personal liability insurance could help you.
Example #2: Everyone loves playing sports, but what happens if a stray ball unintentionally hits a child? Or you're playing street hockey and the puck breaks a window? Personal Liability can protect you if you (or members of your family) cause accidental injury to others.

In fact, even if they don't co-sign or haven't been named on the policy, common-law partners, spouses, and family members are automatically covered provided they live in the insured residence.
