This guide is part of our series on how a tenant insurance policy covers theft.
When a resident living in Kingston, Ontario, discovered two of their e-bikes had been stolen from outside their rental property in August of 2025, they likely felt a mix of shock and despair.
Thankfully for them, a tenant insurance policy provided by APOLLO meant that while the bikes themselves couldn’t be recovered, some of the financial burden of replacing them was taken off their shoulders. They successfully claimed $2,100, making it easier to afford replacement e-bikes at a time when they were already dealing with a lot.
Theft leaves a mark on you emotionally. And while money can’t immediately heal all the damage done by becoming a victim, it does relieve some of the immediate pressure, helping you to process and recover faster. If you’re a renter, a tenant insurance policy could make all the difference after falling prey to a targeted attack.
When you think about a tenant insurance policy, you’re more likely to associate it with things like covering damages to a property, or helping to cover the cost of replacing personal items in your home. What you might not know, is that it can also help offer some level of financial protection for goods stored outside of the building you’re living in.
Theft is an important and core part of most tenant insurance agreements. While every policy is different, key areas which tend to fall under this bracket include factors such as:
Contents coverage. You’ll be reimbursed, to your pre-determined covered amount, for any items stolen which have been included as part of your policy.
Property damage. If damage occurred as part of a break-in, your policy might also cover the costs of repairs which a landlord faces.
Worldwide coverage. Some policies will allow you to make a successful claim even if your items were stolen somewhere other than your home. That extends to e-bikes left safely chained up outside, as well as something like a laptop at a coffee shop.
Lock replacement. You might even get covered for the cost of replacing a padlock if yours was damaged or stolen as part of the theft.
How much you’re covered for, as well as limits on the value of your items, might be determined by the level of contents coverage you choose when signing up for a policy.
Upgrading your coverage can also see you covered for factors like mysterious disappearance. This means your items are covered if they go missing, even if there’s no clear evidence of theft. Just be aware that insurance providers will naturally scrutinise these kinds of claims more closely.
Tenant insurance doesn’t just cover theft, though. Having this kind of financial protection in place has a number of other benefits. Some of the most common reasons people take out this kind of insurance include:
Legal protection, in the form of personal liability cover, if someone is injured at your property
Help with additional living expenses (ALE) if you have to temporarily move somewhere else after your apartment has been damaged
Contents coverage for things other than theft, such as fire damage, vandalism, and some types of water damage (usually from a leaky pipe)
If you do have a tenant insurance policy provided by APOLLO, and want to make a claim after something like a break-in or act of theft, the process is quick and simple. All you need to do is follow these steps:
Get all the details. We always recommend having as much info to hand as possible before making a claim. That means the exact location of your stolen items, how they were stored, the date and time they went missing, and any other relevant information which you think might help.
Log in. Next, you’ll want to log into your policy portal, which should already have details of your policy saved. If you have more than one, click on the policy which you want to make the claim against.
Submit the claim. Click that you want to submit a claim, and then fill in the submission form which is provided to you. This is where all the info you gathered earlier will come in handy. The more information you have immediately available, the quicker this step will be.
Once you’ve submitted a claim, it will be processed by an internal adjustor. You’ll be able to keep up with the status of your claim throughout this time, before being given a final decision.
If you’re renting and are worried about the potential impact of theft, be sure to consider taking out a tenant insurance policy. It could make all the difference financially, at a time when you’re already dealing with a lot of emotional fallout. At APOLLO, we want to take some of the burden off of your plate. Make sure to add an extra layer of financial protection to your life today.
