APOLLO Introduces Earthquake Coverage Add-On for BC Tenant Insurance Policies

August 11, 2026 — APOLLO Insurance Solutions Ltd. (APOLLO), Canada's leading online insurance provider, has introduced earthquake coverage as a new optional add-on for tenant insurance policies in British Columbia.

Standard tenant insurance policies don't cover damage caused by an earthquake. With this update, renters in BC can now add earthquake protection directly through APOLLO's online platform. 

British Columbia is Canada's most seismically active province. If an earthquake makes a rental unit unsafe or unlivable, a landlord's building insurance doesn't cover a tenant's cost of finding somewhere else to stay. Without their own earthquake coverage, renters could be left to pay for temporary housing and other displacement costs out of pocket, on top of replacing any damaged belongings.

"After an earthquake, the most pressing cost for a renter is usually needing somewhere safe to stay while the building is assessed or repaired," said Marco Andolfatto, Chief Underwriting Officer at APOLLO. "Earthquake coverage gives BC renters a way to manage those displacement costs, along with replacing belongings that were damaged during the earthquake."

How It Works

The earthquake add-on can help cover additional living expenses, such as temporary accommodation, food, and transportation, if a rental unit becomes uninhabitable due to earthquake damage, as well as helping pay to replace personal belongings that are damaged. It carries its own deductible, separate from the policy's base deductible, and is subject to the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of the policy.

Renters can add earthquake coverage when they get a quote for tenant insurance in BC, or add it to an existing policy through APOLLO's online platform.
